Correcting this week’s misinformation: week of January 9, 2025

Are mosquitoes vaccinating you without consent?

    The Claim:

A new anti-vaccine claim blames Bill Gates for collaborating with Australia to unleash genetically modified mosquitoes to secretly vaccinate people.

    The Facts:

The claim likely comes from confusion about real scientific projects using genetically modified (GM) mosquitoes. These projects are not meant to vaccinate humans but to fight mosquito-borne diseases. They work by reducing mosquito populations and creating mosquitoes that can’t spread diseases like malaria to people.

The tweet probably refers to the Wolbachia Mosquito Programs, funded in part by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and used in Australia. These programs release mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia bacteria, which lowers their ability to spread viruses like dengue, reducing disease cases.

Vaccines require carefully controlled doses of antigens introduced directly into the human body. Mosquitoes, even genetically modified ones, can’t deliver precise doses of vaccines.

Did children die from heart attacks during a vaccine trial?

    The Claim:

Anti-vaxxers are spreading rumors that they have uncovered a pediatric death by cardiac arrest during the Moderna clinical trial. They claim that this death was hidden from the public and possibly the FDA.

    The Facts:

The claim comes from an article by Alex Berenson, which makes several statements about a child’s death during Moderna’s KidCOVE clinical trial, as well as the safety and transparency of mRNA vaccine approval.

Vaccine clinical trials are closely monitored by regulatory agencies like the FDA and the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Any serious events, including deaths, are reported to these agencies. Moderna’s report to the EMA noted the death and concluded it was not caused by the vaccine. Determining whether the vaccine caused the event involves careful review by independent experts. Information about serious events is also available in public databases, such as the EMA Clinical Trials Register and regulatory filings.

Cardiac arrest, though rare, can happen for many reasons, and just because it happened after vaccination does not mean the vaccine caused it. Moderna likely based its conclusion on medical evidence and expert reviews. The lack of similar cases in the trial further supports the finding that the vaccine wasn’t the cause.

While Moderna hasn’t yet posted results on ClinicalTrials.gov, it has shared reports with other regulatory agencies like the EMA, so there’s no evidence that results are being hidden.

And not for nothing, but kids want to get COVID vaccines, too.

    Are COVID vaccines gene therapy?

    The Claim:

video featuring Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo claims that continuing COVID vaccination is “nuts” as they are gene therapy and bad in other ways.

    The Facts:

Some COVID vaccines work by using mRNA, a temporary “recipe card” to teach your cells how to make a harmless piece of the virus’s spike protein. COVID vaccines are neither gene therapy nor experimental. They were thoroughly tested in large studies and do not change your DNA, as mRNA cannot enter the nucleus of the cell, but instead teach your body how to fight the virus without giving you the illness.

Clinical trials and studies show that these vaccines are safe for children, with serious side effects being extremely rare, while COVID-19 itself can cause long-term health problems, even in kids. Public health experts make vaccine recommendations based on scientific evidence, not ideology, to protect as many people as possible, especially the most vulnerable. While booster shot uptake has slowed, this is often due to misinformation or pandemic fatigue, not because the vaccines are harmful.

Stopping mRNA vaccines entirely would leave people at risk for serious illness and death, as these vaccines have already saved millions of lives worldwide. Vaccines are like a safe and temporary training session for your immune system, teaching it how to protect you better in the future.

Ladapo, on the other hand, is accused of committing scientific fraud and manipulating data to claim that the mRNA vaccines increase the risk of cardiac death.
